New quarter. New goals. New sprint.

But if we don’t clear space—we’re just dragging old problems into a new plan.

As Q1 comes to a close, many leaders are asking familiar questions:

  • What did we accomplish?

  • Where did we fall short?

  • What are our goals for Q2?

But there’s one question that rarely gets asked—and it might be the most powerful:

“What’s no longer serving us?”

It’s a micro-moment—a simple, quiet pause.

But it can unlock clarity, energy, and alignment in ways a metrics review never will.

Maybe it’s a process that creates more friction than flow.

A standing meeting that drains momentum.

A habit of overcommitting.

Or a belief that urgency equals value.

As leaders, we often focus on what to start or what to improve.

But letting go—intentionally—is also leadership.

It creates space for focus.

It models reflection over-reactivity.

It invites the team to be honest about what’s working… and what isn’t.

This question aligns beautifully with Sir John Whitmore’s Coaching for Performance.

He reminds us that performance is less about control and more about unlocking potential—often by removing barriers, not adding more.

So today, instead of only looking forward, take a moment to look inward.

And if you’re asking your team this question—create the space for real answers.

Let them know it’s safe to name what’s not working, even if it’s uncomfortable.

Psychological safety isn’t built through big declarations.

It’s built in micro-moments like this—when leaders invite honesty, and hold space for it.

Micro-moment challenge:

Before you finalize your Q2 plans, ask yourself—and your team:

“What do we need to leave behind?”

Because sometimes the most strategic move… is the one you stop making.
